NATIONAL DAIRY ASSN.

CONFERENCE AT WHANG ARE!

QUALITY OF CHEESE NEEDS INVESTIGATING

Per Press Association. WHANGAEEI, June 26. The annual meeting of delegates ot' the National Dairy association opened this morning, Mr. Arthur Morton presiding over a very representative gathering. North Island delegates were in strong force and there was also a f.air number from the South Maud, the total exceeding 250. . In tlic morning, in addition to re* viewing the'balance sheet, Mr. Morton compared prices, which showed that market values were becoming stabilised. This trend was to the betterment of iudustry the quality of butter on tlio British market had been well maintained but the same could not be said of cheese, judging by the number of complaints received. The quality ox the cheese had not been maintained and there seemed to be some grounds for the statement that tho standard had actually gone back.. Hcvcral schemes were in operation to correct this. Buyers did not seem satisfied with waxing, which reduced shrinkage. If waxing did not meet with approval, its discontinuation would liavo to be discussed. Nothing but good could be said of standardisation and companies which had not allea.dy sampled its benefits would be well advised to do so.

Mr. Morton repeated his statement made two years ago that it was not, to the interest of dairy farmers that the Dairy Control and Meat boards should be amalgamated. Ho had noticed with regret that the president of a provincial executive of the Fanners’ union had advocated the proposal but ho was pleased to see that the sense of the meeting had rejected the suggestions, although by a very small majority. Dairy farmers were engaged in the Dominion’s niosi important primary industry and that was sufficient reason alune for a separate board. Aliy interference would be most regrettable (applause). In touching upon the balance sheet, Mr. Morton said it would have been possible to shew a small credit balance, instead of an apparent loss of £3722 but some of the association’s principal stock hud shown for some time a falling off ia value and it had been considcro; advisable to write £3BOO off in this respect. It was decided to hold the next conference at Hamilton.

The following directors were re-elect-ed: Messrs J. B. Murdoch (Taranaki), J. O. Brown (Wetlington). The Hon. J. B. G-uw was returned unopposed for the Auckland district.

The president reported that, the New Zealand Dairy Coy. had decided to contribute £IOO and the Exporter newspaper £.lO to the earthquake relief fund. All the remits discussed this afternoon were defeated.
