EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND
To the Editor. gi r> .—Quite independently of individual benefactions in Palmerston North tlicra arc not less than one hundred institutions, societies, associations, clubs lodges or committees of various kinds, each of which would bo capable and willing to subscribe sums varying from £5 to £IOO, according to their resources. It is common knowledge that some of these organisations do an incalculable amount of good work, whilst a few of them do not even justify their existence. In the hope that each and every one of them would rise to the occasion in a national calamity, the initiative was promptly taken by one, and followed handsomely by another. With all kindly intent, will each of the other ninety and nine permit mo to hope that our community will stand high in this friendly rivalry, and that each institution will take its share in that privilege of helping distress so acute, and happily, so rare. I am, etc., J. 11. S.
