Although the toll of earthquake damage is daily increasing, and tho sympathy and assistance of tho whole Dominion is being extended to the unfoitunato sufferers, Palmerston North has its own little worries and its own house to put in order, following. Monday’s tornado which struck a trail of wreck and ruin across the town.

Inquiries made since tho occurrence reveal that the damage to property as a result %£ the visitation, may bo assessed at a figure in excess of £2OOO. The heaviest sufferers arc Mr. H. 0.Prcece, of Fitzhcrbort avenue and Mrs, Steer, of Shamrock street. Mr. Prcece had a large fowlhouso totally demolished and as a result, the owner will be forced to sell his entire flock of birds at an unprofitable period of tho year. The fowlhouso was built to accommodate 500 birds and Mr. Prcece . estimates his loss on tho actual building at £2OO, with an extra £IOO as indirect loss as the result of the forced sale of the fowls. The residence occupied b\ Mrs. Steer is owned by Mr. C. Lund and was extensively damaged. It is estimated that £2OO will bo required for reconstruction work in this instance. In several other cases the damage is estimated at a figure in excess of £IOO. Temporary repairs were carried out yesterday and carpenters were in many cases called in to set things to rights. At least one family is yet unable to occupy its home and is being accommodated by friends. No definite steps have so far beeu taken to institute a relief fund but many offers of assistance have been forthcoming. Typical of tho general attitude of sympathy is the offer ot a carpenter who called at tho Times office yesterday and stated that he would be pleased to give his services for reconstruction work in damaged buildings. Classes at tho Girls’ High School were carried on yesterday under difficulties, as four rooms at the northern end of the building are not available for use. Corrugated iron has been placed over places where tho roof has been injured most severely and immediate steps arc being taken to renew the tiles.
