VESTING OF PART OF ALLOWANCE IN WIFE

EXEMPTION FROM DEATH DUTY, Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The annual conference of the Public Service association’s exeeutivo commit tee was opened to-day by Hon. G. W. Forbes. Tho president, Mr. A. Burgess, said that the association was gratified as tho Premier’s announcement that tin. Government wa3 determined not to interfere with the principle of non-politi-cal control of the service. Mr. Forbes expressed regret at the unavoidable absence of the Premier and appreciation of the loyalty of the Pub lie Service. In both ability and loyalty it stood very high indeed, and he thought that was generally recognised by the people. The following officers were elected: —• President, Mr. A. Burgess; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. R. Sinei, K. Fullerton, G. G. S. Ellis (Taranaki), L. Pound, auditor, Mr. R. L. Jellicoe; solicitors, Messrs. Mazengsrb, Hay and Mac Alister; general treasurer, Mr. T. G. Gilbert; lady representatives, Misses M. Boyce and R. ; Harnett; executive committee, Messrs. W. S. Hardy (North Auckland), H. W. C. Macintosh (Auckland), P. S. Foley (South Auckland), R. Sinei (Waikato), F. W. Thompson (Gisborne), W. Boardman (Taranaki), J. H. McKay (Wanganui), F. W. Browne (Hawke’s Bay), W. W. Waugh (Palmerston North), C+. Ward and B. R. Wakelin (Wellington), C. E. Butcher (Marlborough), R. Fullerton (West Coast), G. G. M. Mitchell (Canterbury), J. W. Wissen (Otago), and F. H. Waters (Southland). Remits reaffirmed dealt with the request to alter tho Public Service Classification and Superannuation Act to allow’a contributor whose salary had been reduced through no fault of his own to be allowed to contribute and have his retiring allowance computed on tho increased rate of salary; that tho Government is to be asked to investigate actuarily the possibility of providing increased pensions for widows, based on increased contributions by contributors to the fund; that payment of superannuation up to £SU per annum be not considered as income under the Pensions Act; that any officer at the time of being superannuated bo allowed to vest a proportionate part of the superannuation in his wifo, tho Government to bo asked to arrange for exemption from death duty of contributions to and allowance of the superannuation and National Provident funds; that the limit of £3OO superannuation as a maximum bo removed; and that tho allowances of children of deceased public servants bo continued up to 10 years, instead of 14 years, as at present. The conference strongly advocated tho elimination of tho sick leave amendment and requested a return to tho original regulations and that temporary employees occupying a position of a permanent nature and who are oligiblo for appointment, be placed on the permanent staff.
