YOUNG NEGRO DODGES DEPORTATION ORDER
Was Keen to Join Byrd FAILED TO SAIL ON SHIP GOLDEN CROSS * ‘ WANTED ’ ’ BY CUSTOMS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. Robert William Lanier, the young American negro, who came to New Zealand in an endeavour to join Byrd's Antarctic expedition, and was subsequently acquitted in the Supreme Court on a charge of stabbing the boatswain, was to have been deported bv the steamer Golden Cross to-day.
However, it was later reported thut lie had failed to sail on the steamer. The Customs department is inquiring into the matter.
