BEBBINGTON SHIELD
DANNEVIRKE PUTS IN AN EARLY CHALLENGE,
The first challenge this season for the well-known district Rugby football trophy, the Bebbington Shield, was received yesterday morning by Mr. J. Casey, secretary of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council, the aspirants being the Dannevirko Sub-Union. The management committee of tho council will consider the challenge on Tuesday evening.
Last year there were two matches riinelu. Kangitikci played tho Horowhenua reps, at Foxton on July 7, auci was Deacon by 20 points to nil. Tho other game was played at Levin, where the Bush team were defeated by 13 to S. Dannevirko had put in a challenge, but no match was played with it, owing to the difficulty of finding a date to suit both bodies. The other country union eligible to compete was Oroua, from which a challenge was expected that did not eventuate. It is probable that Dannevirko will be able to put a strong rep. team in the field this season, and in any case its early move in the matter should act as a stimulus to senior football in the Horowhenua district. Although one club team has had to disband, the ranks of the others do not seem likely to suffer, but on the other hand should tend to become consolidated.
