QUEEN OPENS ROYAL TOURNEY AT OLYMPIA
PRINCE DECEIVES COLOURS DISBANDED WEST AFRICAN REGIMENT United Press Association —By Electri* Telegraph—Copyright. RUGBY, May 23. The Queen was the central figure in a brief, but impressive ceremony when she opened the Royal tournament at Olympia to-day. The crowd stood motionless while the bands pealed out the National Antliem. Then the mass of people burst into loud and long cheering. Three guards of honour, supplied by tho Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, occupied nearly the whole arena.
Tho Prince of Wales was in the uniform of the Welsh Guards, and after His Royal Highness had inspected tho guards of honour he entered the Royal box. Both the Queen arid the Prince watched with great interest the clever evolutions carried out by the men of tho various services. Earlier in the day the Prince of Wales, in the garden of St. James'3 palace, received the colours of the West African Regiment, of which he was Colonel-in-Chief, at its disbandment after 30 years of service. Eighteen exofficers of the regiment attended in khaki and 50 ex-members of the regiment in civilian clothes. They were escorted on their farewell march to the palace by the Scots Guards. “I am proud to take over your colours,” said, the Prince. The colours will be preserved for all time at Windsor Castle.
