"In its anxiety to prevent any at' the trade from the prospective settlers in the Westella block finding its way to Palmerston North, the Feilding Chamber of Commerce actually fathered a proposal and requested the Government to spend an additional £ll3OO on roading to save about 11 miles for three or four settlers," remarked Mr. M. A. Eliott at yesterday’s meeting of the council of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce. "This unnecessary and wasteful expenditure would have meant the loading of the whole block with about £2 per acre. If this is not parochialism run wild, 1 don't know what is. "The Minister, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, said that everything possiblo had been done to give the sections the shortest access to Fcilding (why Feilding in particular ?), but as it was desired to give the settlers the land as cheaply as possible, it should not be unnecessarily loaded. It. is satisfactory to note that the Minister has declined the request."
