Mr B. J. Jacobs is Again Elected President
Thero tvas an attendance of about 60 members at the annual meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association last evening. Mr. B. J. Jacobs M - as in the chair.
The annual report and balance sheet, as already published, were read and adopted. In moving the adoption of the report, Mr Jacobs referred to his recent statement that moneys raised for relief of unemployment and distress could not be checked by the public. It was accordingly proposed that a special bank 'account should bo opened for this money and that a balance sheet should be published a-t the end of the M-inter. This work tva.s one of public benevolence and by this means, the public would be able to know how the money was used.
The Department of Internal Affairs had communicated with the association in connection M-ith the establishment of a soldiers’ grave plot at the new cemetery. This was to be laid out in accordance with arrangements made. One disappointing feature was the fact that the membership had fallen from 304 to 276 during the year. The most cordial relations throughout the year had been maintained M-ith the Patriotic Society M-hich had always been willing to meet the association in any matters affecting the M'dfare of returned men.
With regard to unemployment ho was pleased to be able to state that the New Zealand association had answered the branches’ appeal for help by offering Palmerston North any assistance that was required. In conclusion, Sir. Jacobs expressed his appreciation of the hard work and enthusiasm of the committee which had worked the whole year in very excellent fashion indeed. He was sure that members would join with him in his appreciation of the committee’s work. The balance sheet showed a credit balance onfall accounts of £240 19s 5d for the year’s working. The accumulated fund had been increased by £57 ISs lid, while the trust funds amounted to £7OO 17s lid. Election of Officers.
Tho election of officers' for the ensuing year resulted:—President, Mr. B. J. Jacobs (re-elected); hon. treasurer, Mr H. T. Wilson; committee, Messrs J. W. Rutherfurd, C. B. Williamson, W. H. Macmillan, A. W. Mewton, G. Rennie, E. G. Seeker, A. W. Chapman, A. C. Schioler, S. G. Northey and J. E. Smith; delegate to the New Zealand Association conference, Mr. B. J. Jacobs; auditor, Mr. A. T. Bendall (reelected). Tho proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to the press, supper then being dispensed to members present.
