STEWARD’S ARREST DELAYS STEAMER
INCIDENT AT PAPEETE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. According to a passenger’s story* which ’is confirmed by the purser, a delay of two homs was suffered by Tahiti in getting away from Papeete. A steward was arrested by the French authorities on a charge of theft, and bail was refused, owing to tho French law, which requires proof of innocence, as against the British proof of guilt. The stewards demonstrated s on the wharf and wanted to go to the gaol to release their comrade, but a French guard appeared. The stewards also re- j fused to go aboard and so the ship was i held up. However, all ended well enough by someone giving proof that the steward was innocent.
