WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION

The meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union this month took the form of a social afternoon to the children belonging to the Cradle Roll Department, about seventy children being present, as well as a good attendance of adults. Mrs. Ritchie commenced the programme by giving a short talk on tho love of Jesus for little children. “They brought little children unto Him, and He took them up in His arms and blessed them*.” The disciples had tried to send them away, but Jesus had said, “Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for of such in tho Kingdom of Heaven.” 1

After this, “Mother Hubbard” in tho person of Mrs. Gill, who looked very quaint in her gay sunbonnet, with apron to match, aud shawl to complete the make-up, spoke to the children, saying that she was not going t-o be like the Mother Hubbard of old, whose cupboard was so bare, that not even a bone could be found for her poor dog, but was going to show them what was in her cupboard. She then 'handed each child a lucky packet and an orange. Afternoon tea was then handed round tho children doing full justice to the good things provided. Little Essie Hendorson then gave a recitation, which was followed by a song from Audrey Tily, tho rest of the afternoon being spent by the children in the playing of games, and the singing of nursery rhymes, tho music being supplied by Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Kingston in turn. Finally, 'Auld Lang Syne” was sung Cheers were given for Miss Astbury for organising the party, for Mrs Gill, for impersonating Mother Hubbard, for Mrs. Ferguson in her capacity as president and a very pleasant afternoon was thus brought to a close.
