JUDGE’S COMMENTS IN GARDEN COMPETITION

WALLACE. CUP TROPHY. Mr. T. F. Conway, who judged the gardens entered for the Wallace Cun eompetition, the place-fillers in which have already been published commented on the entries as follows: —“Although only nine gardens were entered for the Wallace Cup competition, they were, on the whole, very good. Four, however, were particularly outstanding. It was important to sec that the gardens were in a constaut, state of cultivation, said Mr. Conway, and this was opt to be overlooked. Another faulf was that some gardens were not strong in every feature. In the eompetition 100 points were awarded, being as follow:—3s points for improvement, during Ibc year, 15 for originally and artistic layout, .10 for colour grouping of flower beds, 10 for the symmetrical arrangement of shrubs, etc., 5 for vegetables for immediate use, 5 for vegetables for future use, 10 for orderliness and 10 for general effect.

“My construction of the term ‘year’ is the period from the time of entry until the closing of the competition," continued Mr. Conway, “and not from the beginning to the end of the season. Colour grouping is a feature to which closer attention is necessary and many lose points in this manner. It is a pity that more do not enter for the competition, as many gardens about the town are well wortli entering, and it is very pleasing to note the improvement in home gardens in recent years. Perhaps if the conditions of the competition were more widely known tho entries would increase—a very desirable feature."
