SIR Wm. NOSWORTHY’S - SERVICES RECOGNISED

His services to tho people of Ashburton County over a period of 20 years as member for the district and Minister of tho Crown were recogni*cd to-night, when Sir William Nosworthv was entertained at a banquet given by people of the town and country. Tie re was an attendance of about 300, representing local bodies and the public. Among the guests were: Sir Heaton Rhodes, Messrs. T. D. Burnett, D. Jones and F. J. Rolleston. Mr. F. G. Evans, provincial president of the Farmers’ Union, presided and had with him the Mayor (Mr. R. Galbraith). Apologies for absence were received from Mr. Coates and the Prime Minister, tho former eulogising the work of Sir William as Minister of the Crown, saying he had never looked for a gap in tho fence. Mr. J. Carr, County chairman, in proposing the toast of the guest, spike in glowing terms of Sir William Nosworthy’s work for Ashburton since he was elected in 1908. i Sir William said he had no thoughts on the matter at present, buc if the occasion over arose, he would unshcath the sword and again enter the fight. A grandfather clock was presented tu Sir William and a gift handed him for Lady Nosworthy. Mr. Jones argued tho claim of cooperation, saying too much time was spenting in' finding ways of stopping men from working. If Parliamentarians tackled the problem of unemployment as they knew it should bo tackled, it would soon be solved. A guaranteed rate of 14s a day was the worst blow evor struck at the New Zealand workers. The coming Parliament would be a most important one and members would have to bend to meet the blast.
