The alterations carried out uuder plans prepared by the borough engineer, Mr. T. K. Hay, have altogether changed the interior, making it brighter and generally more convenient for patrons who may now have easy access to the volumes instead of having to strain eyesight and necks. The lending room -has been lengthened by including what was originally a members’ reading room and tho shelves all through have been lowered, so that now all volumes are within easy reach. Tho librarian (Mr. A. Farmer) has separate office accommodation and more room to perform the duties connected with library organisation. Tho walls have been papered and the facings varnished and while the work of placing the books in the shelves is not yet complete, much has been accomplished to meet the convenience of subscribers. Later on the books are to bo gone over with a view to rejecting those" beyond redemption A and Tcbinding others. It is also proposed to strengthen tho selection committee, so that tho varied tastes in literature may be more adequately catered for. The Mayor (Mr. E. Fair) is to be congratulated in having this long waited for improvement completed.
