From Our Own Correspondent. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Woodville Borough council was held on Thursday evening. This will be the last meeting of the council in office. Those present were the Mayor, Mr. Horne, Crs. Ruddick, Johnston, Pickering, Harding, Forbes and Nicholas. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Connop. A motion of condolence with him and Mrs. Connop in the death of their daughter was carried, members standing,

The Mayor, in referring to the change in the proprietorship of the Examiner, said he would like to express his appreciation of the services of Mr. and Miss Grant, and to extend to Mr. Vile a hearty welcome. Cr. Forbes, in speaking in support of the Mayor's remarks, said that he knew the Grant family well and was sure that the borough had suffered a loss in the departure of Mr. and Miss Grant. A letter was received from the secretary of the Manawatu Rugby Football Union, asking if the grounds would be available for the ensuing season. A motion that permission be granted under the same conditions as last year, was (ferried.

The Mayor moved that the ranger’s attention be drawn to the number of stock permitted to roam the borough. A letter was received from the Hockey club expressing appreciation of the treatment received from the council during the past season, also of tho state in which the grounds had been kept. Tho club sought permission to use the grouds during the coming season. Cr. Nicolas moved that permission be granted on the condition that the town clerk be consulted before anything was done to them.—This was carried. Reports.

The Borough foreman reported that 142 yards of metal had been carted and spread on the following streets:—Vogel street West, Vogel street East, Woodlands road, Station street, Ormond street footpath and Richardson street footpath. Kerbing had been completed in Ormond street from Stace’s hotel to the Dental clinic rooms and the footpath alongside the kerbing had been formed and metalled. Vogel street kerbing, next to the Masonic hotel and next to Mr. Grinlinton’s, had been completed by filling in the edges and water tables with ashplialt. At present, kerbing was being put in next to the six new Railway cottages in Richardson street.

Both reservoirs were full and the treatment works were in good order. Cr. Nicholas said he was pleased to see that tho water was now being kept up in the reservoir. Cr. Harding said he thought the removal of the kink in the line had had a good deal to do with the -improvement. Tho gasworks manager reported as follows:—Expenditure: Coal used 24 tons, £55 -4s; working expenses, £27; interest and sinking fund, £35;. total, £177 14s. Earnings: Gas sales. £120; tar sales, 13s; coko sales, £3 7s; fitting account, £2; total, £126. Cr. Harding said that there was a good deal of complaint about the gas and Cr. Nicolas thought that corrosion in the pipes was responsible. The Mayor agreed that this might be tho case, but the pipes had been blown and the Row was now quite good. The town clerk (Mr. D. Keay) reported as follows: — The following licenses have been issued during the month: For hoardings 1, motor drivers 2, scaffold 1, hall 2, building permits 2, Health Act 4. Ho reported that a number of scats left in the rotunda at Fountaine Square were damaged, presumably by boys, and on various occasions the Borough staff has had to replace them in the rotunda. As the seats continued to be thrown out, to prevent further damage he had had them stored underneath the rotunda and locked up. Borough Finances.
