BULLS-OHAKEA SPORTS MEETING

An Outstanding Success

From Our Own Correspondent.

The sixth annual sports meeting of the Bulls-Ohakea Athletic club was held on the Bulls Domain on Saturday and the function, despite strong counter attractions in Wanganui and Palmerston North, was one of the most successful gatherings that has been held on the Coast this year. The weather conditions were ideal and the attendance of the public, as borne out by the gate receipts, was greater than that at last year's meeting. The club is to be congratulated on its zeal in having such star performers as C, H. Jenkins (sprinter), Jack Fleming (middle distance and sprint runner), and M. Gane (cyclist) appearing. These athletes came up from Wellington on the morning of the sports and treated the fans to some classy exhibitions. With them came Mr. Chas. Parsonage (an official of the Wellington club) as manager and he kept the sports going in full swing per medium of his stentorian megaphone. The track was very fast and. some snappy times were clocked during the day by the timekeepers. The Highland events were as usual, a very popular section of the programme and keen interest was manifested in them all day. The competition for the Primary Schools shield (presented by the President, Mr. C. E. Vile) was another attractive featuro of the schedule and the efforts of the future athletes were watched with interest. At the conclusion of the school' events, the shield was presented to the Poxton school (last year’s winners) by Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., who congratulated it on its success and was also loud in his praise of the efforts of the Athletic Club in promoting such a successful meeting. The officials worked well and kept things moving along in fine style, and in the secretarial tent Mr. E. M. Broughton and his assistants did good work. In the evening the visiting athletes were entertained at a dance given an the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Tricker. The party left for Wellington the following day after spending the morning shooting up the “Bulls bunnies.”

Results are given below:— i 100 yards Maiden: L. Homes 1, H, Dixon 2, R. Ingram 3. Time 11 l-sth. secs.

The field beat the starter (with the exception of Jenkins 'who never moved from the holes until the gun) and the race was in doubt until the last 10 yards when Strange shot ahead with a great burst and beat tho limit men homo by inches. The scratch man was given an impossible task to get the field. 220 yards Handicap. First heat: F. Greenwood (18) 1, C. H. Jenkins (scr.) 2, A. R. Eyres (10) 3. Time 22 secs. Second heat: R. Strange 3, Timo 21 4-sths secs. This was a great race, and judging by the ease with which Jenkins ran into second place in his heat he looked to have a good chance of landing the honours. Tho last 30 yards on the bend he was run out on to the rough track and could not get through. Porter made good uso of his start and got in just ahead of Strange, who put in wonderful finish.

440 yards Handicap: W. J. Gimblctt (29) 1, J. Pawson (II) 2, J. T. Fleming (scr.) 3. Time 52 secs. The best race of the day. The limit men shot away in fine style and set a hard pace for the back markers. On rounding the final bend, Pawson drew up to Gimblett and then thq.. scratch man (Fleming) amazed the spectators with a brilliant spurt which ranged him almost alongside the Wanganui man, who was inches behind Gimblett.

880 yards handicap: S. Newnham (55) 1, J. Pawson (8) 2, T. Thompson (55) 3. Time 1.53 secs. Tho winner ran with great determination and showed that ho had a littlo up his sleeve when he breasted tho tape ahead of Pawson.

Mile handicap: S. Newnham (155) 1, G. Moore (130) 2, A. Simpson (180) 3. Time 4,27. Here again Newnham showed tho field a clean pair of heels and ran a nicely judged race in win comfortably from Moore in 4.27. Gibbons, the holder of the West Coast title also competed and although he ran a good race, found the handicaps a bit too solid for him.

Powell, although he rode a great race from his mark, was lucky to win as Hamer had tyre trouble when in a good position. The backmarkcr (Gane) could not make up the leeway on his opponents. Two mile cycle handicap: J. Powell (90) 1, R. Bland (130) 2, M. Gano (scr.) 3. Timo 5-2 secs. Powell rodo another splendid race, won a popular victory. Three mile cycle handicap: M. Gano (scr.) 1, R, Bland (180) 2, J. Powell (130) 3. Time 7-45 secs. This was the most exciting race of the wheel events and aroused the public to a high pitch

of enthusiasm. The limit men made the pace a cracker, but tho backmarkers gradually drew up to them and then there ensued a battle royal. _ Gane overhauled Bland and Powell in the back stretch and took the lead into the straight. Bland came again and caught the Wellington crack but the latter showing great determination and brilliance, landed home a winner by the narrowest of margins. Powell was a close third.
