BAD MOTOR SMASH ON LONGBURN ROAD

Terrific Impact

CAR AND LORRY BADLY DAMAGED IN COLLISION

OCCUPANTS OF CAR SUFFER EXTENSIVE INJURIES.

Struck with terrific force by a heavy lorry, a five-seater car driven by Mr. C. Harper, of Bainesse, was yesterday smashed out of recognition on the Longbum road about three-quarters of a mile from the township.

With Mr. Harper in the car, were three young women, all of whom were injured to a greater or lesser degree. Miss Audrey Brooke-Taylor, aged 17 years, sustained a broken jaw, broken clavicle, abrasions to the face, cuts over tho eye and probably internal injuries. Miss Lois Brooke-Taylor, aged 15 years, severe cut on lip, abrasions on body, and cuts on arms. 1 Miss Kahua Adelaide Poananga, aged 12 years, of Eangiotu, suffered injuries to the shoulder, abrasions to chest and face and several teeth missing.

. Mr. Harper himself suffered scalp wounds and slight injuries to the leg.

Terrific Impact.

Residents of the neighbourhood stato that the impact between tho two vehicles was heard half a mile away. In the circumstances, it appears fortunate that only one of tho four occupants of the car was seriously hurt. Aroused by the crash of tho collision, a crowd quickly collected to find the three young women lying on the road bleeding extensively from their injuries, while Mr. Harper was jambed in the wreckage underneath the car. Mr. J. W. Rodden, who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident, summoned a doctor and an ambulance.

Naturally, the lighter car suffered the greater part of the damage, but the heavier lorry, after narrowly missing a telegraph pole, came to rest about 10 yards from the scene. Tho windscreen was shattered, as was the glass at tho back while the right hand wheel was torn completely off. The bumper was twisted badly, both lights were broken, the radiator crushed and the steering gear badly broken. The vehicle came to rest in the willow bushes off the right hand side of the road, but neither of the two occupants suffered more than superficial cuts. A Glancing Blow.

The accident occurred opposite the residence of Mr. J. A. Cooksley, and Mr. and Mrs. Cooksley were able to render first aid to the injured occupants of the car before their removal to hospital. They were carried into tho house, where everything possible was done to make them comfortable before the arrival of the ambulance, which was soon on tho scene and the patients were under medical attention within 20 minutes.

Mrs. Cooksley, although she did not see tho positions of the two vehicles prior to the accident, saw tho impact and the car driven back about ten yards, and was slewed round by the force of the collision. A terrific crash marked the collision, debris from the broken v car and lorry being strewn beside the road.
