ESPLANADE CAMP SITE BEST IN NEW ZEALAND

But Lacks Facilities

MOTORISTS PREPARED TO . HELP IN IMPROVEMENTS

To-day tlic motor camping grounds at the Esplanade arc to he inspected by a joint committee of the Borough council and Manawatu Automobile association in an endeavour to effect improvements that will make them more popular with tourists.

When the matter was mentioned at a meeting of motorists last evening, Mr. E. Edwards took occasion to voico his feelings on the question. Tt was scandalous, he observed, that the camping area should be in the condition it was. Palmerston North was one of the jnost attractive places in New Zealand and people had to pass through the town, whether they wanted to or not. There was a tremendous opportunity not being taken advantage of by leaving the grounds as they were—a joke. Ife considered it would pay the ratepayers to spend £IOOO in making the camping site attractive and he did not know why it had not been done. The chairman (Mr. E. K. B. Holben) stated in fairness to the Borough council that shortage of funds had been the reason for no improvements being mado but the Automobile association was prepared to assist financially, if the council would do its part. Mr. W. McKenzie stated that he had met an Auckland motorist on tho area and the latter had agreed that Palmerston North had tho best site for a camp in New Zealand but it wanted facilities.
