PIG WEIGHTS

(To the Editor). Sir, —Will you kindly allow me space to explain my attitude in regard to weighing of pigs by the various bacon and freezing companies bought at “hook weights.’ ’ Some few months ago the Dairy Farmers’ Union brought the matter up of the Railway department’s taking over the scales at the various weighing stations and at the following meeting I pointed out to the executive, that every farmer had the opportunity of checking scales and seeing his pigs weighed when sold over the scales, but —that if sold at hook weights, the farmer was more or less in the hands of the purchasing company. Although a large percentage of farmers thought the Government had some check over weights, I was of the opinion that no such check existed.

At a subsequent meeting, the secretary stated he had inqunred and as far as he could gather there was no outside cheek of hook weights. I respectfully suggest to the bacon and freezing companies, that if some outside supervision existed the farmer would have more faith in hook weights and so avoid the extra carting, handling and bruising which necessarily follows weighing at stations. —I am etc., T. POUPARD. Glen Oroua, March 4, 1929.
