The regular monthly meeting of the Makcrua Drainage board, was hol'd yesterday, Trusteo H. J. T. Hume presiding over the following trustees: —H. Barber, T. D. Lynch, J. H. P. Liggins and J. F. Carter. Routine business was attended to and accounts totalling £979/4/1 passed for payment.
A charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-lorry in Cuba Street on Monday, was preferred against Benedick Olio Christenson, aged 69 years, drainlayer, in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday. On the application of Mr. Ongley, accused was remanded until Monday next, bail of £2O being granted.
Taxi drivers and service car proprietors of Napier passed a resolution protesting against charges under tho Third Party Insurance Act, complaining that they have to pay too much and the private owner too little. They claim that the majority of accidents occur to private owners and that tho burden of taxation has become so great already that taxi men and services barely make a living. The executive of the Manawatu branch of the Royal Life Saving Society met on Monday evening. The award of proficiency certificates and bronze medallions vas approved to the following, whom the chairman, Mr. W. C. Collier, commented formed a very fine class, none of whom had made a slip during their examination: —David Smillie, Edward S. Beverley, Frederick Marks, John Coates, John Wilson and Arnold S. McDowall (Y.M.C.A. class); Phyllis E. Nicholls and Dorothy Babington (Girl Guides 1 class).
