HAMMOND ANOTHER CENTURY.

United Press Association —By Electrii Telegraph—Copyright. Received Monday, 7.50 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 4. The cricket game between England and Victoria was resumed in pleasant weather on a good wicket, a light shower overnight not affecting it. The batsmen' proceeded cautiously and Hammond reached 50 in 96 minutes. Alexander, tho young fast bowler, developed great paco and is faster than Larwood but lacks direction. He was making the ball fly. Tyldcsley moved along quietly, which was not surprising after his long run of non-success. The century was brought up in 116 minutes. The partnership realised a century in 109 minutes. the batting being neat, if not vigorous. Tyldeslcy reached 50 after batting for two hours. Shortly after lunch, Hammond reached his 100. He had been at the wickets 173 minutes. It was his seventh three-, figure score of the tour. Tyldeslcy was very subdued but made many neat strokes. Two hundred was brought up after 201 minutes.

Then Alexander, with a new ball, got Hammond’s wicket, the batsman playing the ball on. Hammond gave a chanceless display. He was at the wickets 192 minutes and hit five fours. The partnership added 151 in 145 minutes.

Hcndren baited very freely, pulling and cutting well. Ho soon reached tho twenties. Tyldesley batted just over three hours for a chancclcss 81. He made three boundary hits. It was his highest score in first class cricket this tour, his previous best being 69. Larwood received a splendid reception, which was significant after Saturday’s occurrence. He scored at the rate of a run a minute, including three fours. Hendren gavo a nice display and batted for 73 minutes. Ho hit three fours. Both Larwood and Hendren were dismissed at 295. Tho Englishmen made a poor showing after tea, Alexander, who is a real find as an express bowler, getting three wickets for five runs off 18 balls. Chapman had a fine reception, but there was astonishment when he remained at the wicket after being bowled and much amusement when it was discovered ho was waiting to run for Freeman, who was limping badly. ■ Ryder ordered the visitors to follow on. This is tho first time the visitors have had that experience in this tour. The second innings commenced at ten minutes to five, England being 269 in arrears. Runs came at tho rate of a lun a minute, when Jaidine should have been run out but the ball was returned to tbc wrong end. At 5.30 p.m., an appeal was made against the light but was not allowed. The half century was reached m 4o minutes. . Stumps were drawn on account oi the bad light at 5.40. Both batsmen batted neatly, the bowling being of good standard.
