DEMONSTRATION OF LIFE-SAVING AT LOCAL BEACHES
CLUBS TO BE FORMED.
To bring its work before the public and emphasise the need for life-saving at beaches used by district residents the Manawatn Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society arranged for demonstrations at Tangimoana and Foxton beaches on Sunday by a team of 15 from the Miranui Surf club, the champions of the Dominion and holders of tho Nelson Shield, came from AVellington to demonstrate tho best methods. At Tangimoana the party was mes by members of the Boach Improvement Society and at Manawatu Hoads by Messrs J. Linklater, M.P., J. K. Hornblow and M. E. Perreau, the Mayor. In each case a hearty welcome was extended and the need emphasised for the provision of lifesaving facilities. The team gave exhibitions of both land and water drill. Mr. AV. C. Collier, president of the Manawatu Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society, explained to the onlookers the methods of resuscitation employed and various other points in the land drill. The weather at both beaches was favourable and about 200 were present at Tangimoana and between 400 and 500 at Manawatu Heads. As a result of the demonstration it has been definitely decided to form a beach team at Manawatu Heads, and the Mayor of Foxton and Mr. Linklatcr, as chairman of the Harbour board, are jointly calling a public meeting this week to inaugurate the movement.
