SPORTS CARNIVAL TO-DAY

On the Showgrounds this afternoon, eventuates the biggest amateur athletic sports meeting that has been held in Palmerston North. No effort has been spared by the Manawatu Amateur Athletic Cycling Club, under whose auspices the gathering is being conducted, to make the carnival a success, and patrons are ensured of an exciting and | enjoyable afternoon’s sport. Record entries have boen received, and among those competing are: Miss Norma Wilson, ex-New Zealand title-holder and : one of the Dominion’s representatives ! at the 1928 Olympic Games: Stan Lay. 1 holder of the Australasian record for javelin throwing, who also wore the Porn leaf,at the 1928 Olympiad; Miss Margaret Barron, holder of the Wellington provincial ladies’ championship, who will make her first public appearance in Palmerston North; Miss Phyljlis Stewart, who with her team mates, ' Misses Z. Adsett and I. Wright, has | travelled all the way from Wairoa to compete at the meeting, and who is to meet Miss Wilson in a special challenge race; Misses B. and G. Jackson, the Carterton A.A. Club’s leading lady sprinters, fresh from their victories at Waipawa on Wednesday last, where they cleaned up the programme; Tom and Arnold Oakley, grass track riders de luxe, the former the holder of two Now Zealand championship titles; and last, but not least, the Manawatu athI lotos and cyclist, headed by H. Mac!Donald (half and 1 mile) and M. Donald (cyclist) both of whom represented the Manawatu Sub-Centro at the Wellington provincial championships, and tho former at the New Zealand championships, also last minute advice has been received that a team pf five runners would be arriving from Hastings to compete so that there should not be a dull moment, tho’Club has engaged the Manawatu Pipe Band -who will bo in attendance all the afternoon. Refreshments of all kinds will-be available on the ground.
