P.N. AND DISTRICT HEAD TEACHERS CONFER
NEW SYLLABUS DISCUSSED WITH BOARD’S INSPECTORS. A conference of headteachers of Palmerston North and district was heid in the Technical school yesterday morning, when a number of points in connection with tho interpretation of the new syllabus were discussed. Messrs N. T. Lambournc and A. C. Crawford, of the inspectorate, were present and explained a number of points brought up by the assembled teachers. Particular reference was made to the teaching of post primary subjects in the schools and in this connection, Mr. Lambournc pointed out that instruction should be given in both French and elementary mnthematics, but according to tho inspector’s interpretation, one of these two subjects would be sufficient. In consequence of this announcement, it is probable that the Palmerston North headmasters will modify their plans and teach each child only one post primary subject. Mr. Lambourne, in referring to the question generally, expressed the opinion that the Palmerston North headmasters had been very wise in deciding to commence tho post primary work, although a number of the Wellington headmasters had decided to avail themselves of tho option and to take no action in the matter.
Mr. J. Murray (rector of the Boys’ High school) and Mr. G. G. Hancox (director of the Technical school) were present by invitation in addition to some 25 headteachers of Palmerston North and district primary schools. After a full discussion of the syllabus, Messrs Lambourne and Adams gave a number of rulings on variouspoints, and offered suggestions likely to be helpful to teachers in their interpretation.
At the conclusion of the conference, members of the Technical school staff entertained the visiting teachers at morning tea.
