The Governor-General Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson arrived in Wanganui last night from Taumarunui via the. river. They called at several native settlements, where speeches of welcome were made. In his addresses to tho natives Sir Charles urged tho revival of native arts. Their Excellencies last night attended tho Dominion Band contest.

Mr. O. Bevington-Jonos, of Kopanc, is a <patient in the Palmerston North 'hospital suffering from pneumonia.

The New Zealand Gazette announces the appointments to second lieutenancies in the Manawatu Mounted Bides of Messrs Kenneth Simmonds and Athol William Viles. The death is announced from London, of Mr Charles Dorman, director of Messrs Dorman, Long and Co., iron and steel manufacturers. The deceased was heir to Sir Arthur Dorman. His Honor Mr. Justice Frazer, Messrs G. T. Booth (employers representative) and A. L. Monteith (employees representative) conducted a short sitting of tho Arbitration Court in Palmerston North yesterday. Major W. G. Stevens, 8.N.Z.A., who recently graduated at Staff College, Camberly, returned by tho Maunganui on Tuesday, accompanied by his wife and two children. He will be stationed at Palmerston North. Misses B. and G. Jackson, of tho Carterton Amateur Athletic Club, and Mr. Stan Lay, of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club, are tho guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Brown, at 205 Princess street, Palmerston North. Captain J. S. G. Fraser, D. 5.0., 8.N., arrived from England by tho Buahine on Wednesday to take up the position of socond naval member of the New Zealand Naval board, in succession to Captain C. N. Beyne, who leaves foT England by the lonic on March 13. Captain Fraser was formerly in command of the light cruiser Canterbury.

The death is announced from Auckland of the Bev. Lawrence Thompson, M.A., Presbyterian Minister, whose last permanent charge was Carterton, although later supplying Island Bay, Wellington. The late Mr Thompson was a graduate of Otago University and was trained at Theological Hall, Dunedin. His wife is lady principal of Girls’ College, Solway, Masterton. Mr Colin L. Bailey ,of the relieving staff of teachers of the Wellington Education board, has been awarded a senior university scholarship in education, tenable at Victoria University College. Only one scholarship is allotted each year between the four university colleges. Mr Bailey studied under Professor Gould, and is the third in succession of his pupils to win this scholarship.

At a conference of Palmerston North and district primary school headteachers held in Palmerston North yesterday morning, opportunity was taken to farewell Mr. N. T. Lambourno, senior inspector of tho Wanganui board, who has been appointed to a position on the Education department. On behalf of the assembled teachers, Mr. W. A. Swinbourn, president of tho Palmerston North Headmasters’ association, expressed tho general regret which was felt at Mr. Lambourne’s impending departure.
