CRICKET IN FEEDING

Hunterville Narrowly Defeated

IN REPRESENTATIVE MATCH Competition matches in Feilding were suspended on Saturday, owing to the fact that the Feilding Cricket association was calied upon to provide two representative teams, one playing Manawatn at Palmerston North and the other playing Hunterville on Kowhai park. Weather conditions were decidedly favourable for the match played in Feilding, although the wicket was hard and if anything favoured the bowlers.

Feilding won the match by five runs, although the opening stages made it appear that the visitors were in for a decisive victory.

Thy game commenced at 2 o'clock, Feilding opening with Whitehead and 6. Connell to the bowling of A. Bowick and Ifalhvood. Runs came slowly ami wickets fell before the bats could make any impression. The position was far from promising when four wickets had fallen and the situation became worse when Hailwood did the hat trick, dismissing Fitzherbert, Telford and Laing in succession. Meech then joined Wild, junr., and batted confidently until he was bowded by Hailwood. This stage saw the score move rapidly, Wild, junr., giving a splendid and encouraging exhibition. Stevens joined Wild and helped the score along and over the hundred mark, when lie was bowled by the exFeilding cricketer Stewart. Wild sen. then joined liis son but the partnership failed to endure, the youthful bat being caught by Porter off Stewart with a score of 38. The innings closed for a total of 117. Hallwoo'd accounted for most of the wickets, taking six for 42, while Stewart captured two for 12.

Hunterville opened its account with Stewart and A. Bowick, the former making 18 before he was dismissed by Telford. This was mainly- produced in a bright partnership with Still, who will be remembered as having played in Feilding a year or so ago. Still left with a tally of 33 and Porter saw the rest of tho wickets fall, as he batted steadily for a score of 2G. The innings closed for 112, Stevens and Telford being responsible for the bulk of the wickets.

This gave Feilding a win on tho first innings, but Hunterville had thoughts of yet winning by deciding to carry on. However, there was not the time and Feilding had six wickets down for (52 when stumps were drawn.

On No. 2 wicket, Nondescripts met High .School and defeated tho boys comfortably on the first innings. Stalker gave the boys a lot of leather hunting when he struck form, contributing 40 to the tally, which included five sixes and four fours. Fish also showed the younger players how to weild the willow and Bousfteld was another of tho veterans who contributed double figures. Whitehead was agaiu an asset to tho Nondescripts and his 37 was provided in quick time. The boys failed to make any serious impression, Prebblo being the only member of the team to worry the veterans. They found that sixes were not as easy to get as appeared when Stalker sent the leather out into South street and elsewhere.

On the third wicket, another scratch match was played between Feilding A and B teams, the former winning comfortably with a score just short of 300, for which Buist was responsible for round about 70. The following are the details: —

At a meeting of the management committee of tlie Feilding Cricket Association, presided over by Mr A. E. Sandford, it was resolved to advise the Rangitikei Association that Feilding would be prepared to arrange a match with H. M. McGirr’s eleven either on Easter Saturday, Monday or Tuesday. It was suggested that Feilding provide a match for tho visitors on Good Friday, but this was found inconvenient. In regard to tho proposal to play a match against a Horowhenua eleven, it was decided to advise the Levin Association that March 2nd would be suitable.

The meeting considered the local competitions and decided to play a further round of one-day matches.
