APPLES MEET WELL STOCKED MARKETS

Big American Imports

SMALL CROPS WILL YIELD LIKE PRICES

EUROPEAN DEMAND DEFLECTED. United Press Association —By Electri* Telegraph—Copyright. Received Sunday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Fob. 23. Although the quantity of apples coming to the United Kingdom from Australia and New Zealand this season is estimated at only about 1,650,000 boxes, 'compared with 4,150,0000 in 1928, importers do not anticipate the early arrivals will make high prices. Supplies from Canada and the United States have been very hea\ r y and there is a prospect that they will be maintained on a large scale for at least another six weeks.

Consequently, the first Australian and Ncyv Zealand cargoes will meet with severe competition for the quality of the American apples norv being marketed is excellent and hard varieties, like Newtons, arc keeping well. These heavy supplies are naturally having au effect on prices and apples to-day are decidedly cheap. Oregon Newtons are fetching 12s to I3s per box and wholesale, and winesaps about a shilling less. Many shopkeepers arc retailing excellent apples at fourpenee per pound and thero are plenty obtains bio at threepence, consequently importers are not hopeful about the opening prices for Australian and Ncyv Zealand offerings, except for the finest varieties. The fact that large quantities of apples are being shipped direct to Scandinavia, Holland and Germany is also regarded as likely to havo some effect on prices here,. as Continental buyers will not purchase so mpph in London, as hitherto.
