BREEDING EWES COMMAND HIGH PRICES

At Feilding Fair TWO- TOOTHS FETCH £3 5/6 The extraordinary demand for breeding ewes throughout the country was reflected In the prices realised at the Feilding ewe fair yesterday, when the associated auctioneers yarded an offering numbering round about 27,000. The sale opened cautiously at 10.30 o’clock on the 4 and 5-yr. lots, but it was not long before buyers displayed a determination to fill up at any cost.

Bidding came freely and prices rose to values which suggested little if any appreciation of the present market fluctuations as regards wool, iambs and fats.

The only justification for the high prices paid must be put down to a confidence in the months to come. With wool sliding back to almost pre-war levels, the price for lamb dropping, and quotations for fat ewes and wethers easing, big prices were not confidently expected, in spite of the sales at Maugaweka and Taumarunui. However, the goodwill of tho Fcilding market is something upon which farmers rest their confidence and what the store stock market of Feilding sets is accepted without question. Compared with last year’s fair, prices wero up, for the four and five-year ewes, by (is per head. The offering was generally good and anything with a sound mouth was readily snapped up. Hill-bred sheep were keenly sought after and the sale improved as it progressed. Prices rose to almost boom figures when the two-tooths were offered. The first few pens were treated with caution and vendors’ reserves were not reached when the bidding hung fire at 425. A pen of pure-bred sheep of A. McDougall’s then sold at 57s 6d, but this price was soon passed when a line of 40 pure-bred 2-ths. offered on account of J. D. Hocking sold at £3 5s 6d. Sales then proceeded at prices round about 40s and over.

Vendors certainly had a great sale and should be well satisfied with the fair. It was an extraordinary good sale all through. Range of Prices.
