S.P.C.A.

Feilding Inspector’s Report Mr. C. A. Phillips, Inspector of the Feilding branch of the S.P.C.A., reports on his activities, as follows: Since the Society’s last meeting nothing of a serious nature has come before my notice. A steady supervision has been carried out fom a prevention point of view. One of the chief aims of the S.P.C.A. has been to provido an ample supply of good water, chiefly in. stock holding paddocks, and much has been accomplished in this direction. The value of an abundant supply of water near a large stock centre like Feilding cannot be overestimated. About this time last season I drew the attention of one or two at the auction mart as to the overpacking of pigs in sacks usually conveyed in motor-cars, an excellent quick mode of conveyance, but it can be overdone in the hot weather experienced of late. Overpacking really amounts to cruelty, and will be dealt with accordingly. This might also apply to poultry conveyed in too small boxes. The Feilding saleyards are now becoming one of the largest centres for the sale of dairy stock, my attention has bceu drawn in one or two instances to the practice of some to bring their dairy cows forward unmilked and driven fairly long distances. This practice may be permissable to dairy stock at show fixtures when the stock are only quietly moved about, but wheu tho unfortunate cow has to travel some 10 or 12 miles unmilked it is a different matter and the animal undoubtedly suffers. A good deal of distemper in dogs exists at present in Feilding and district. Two suffering dogs were found around the town in a very bad stage of the disease, and were destroyed. One dog with a broken leg was destroyed. Regular visits have been mado to stock sales, auction mart, and freezing works. An inspection of stock trains passing has received my attention.
