MATRICULATION DISPLACED

FOR SYSTEM OF ACCREDITING.

“I think it is rather a feather in Mr. Wild’s cap that this accrediting system has been adopted,” said Mr. A. H. Atkinson, chairman, when speaking at the meeting of tho Board of Managers of the Feilding Agricultural High School on Wednesday night.

This comment arose out of the following extract from Mr. L. J. Wild’s report to the board: — “As regards the reaction of the New Zealand University on school work one notices with satisfaction that the Senate of the University has agreed that a system of accrediting is bolter than the matriculation examination and a move is to be made to introduce such a system. This will romove one serious hindcranco to the evolution of a rational view of the function of schools and of the nature of the process of education on the part of the public.”

Mr. Atkinson said that Mr. Wild had been hammering away for the recognition of the accrediting system, as against the matriculation examination, ever since he had come to Feilding. The principal, in speaking of the change, said that there was now no matriculation examination. Matriculation now referred to an entrance examination—in this instance entrance to a University The Senate had resolved to introduce a system of accrediting and in doing .V might have in view an intention to* raise the standard of the entrance examination He considered that the Senate pro posed to accept accrediting in every rc-spcct that it had been asked for The introduction of the system would mean a loss of.fees for examiners.
