People Deteriorating on South Wales Coalfields
WORK NEEDED MORE THAN FOOD Australian Press Assn.—United Service. Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 21. The Ministry of Health has issued a grave report on conditions in the South Wales coalfield:*. It states the effects of prolonged poverty are becoming increasingly noticeable in the health of the men, women and children, and a general deterioration of physique is in sight.
The situation is unparallelled in modern history. The nearest similar case was the cotton famine in 1862-61.
In discussing the destructive effect of illness upon character and morals, the authorities slate they are more struck by the depression, and hopelessness of those who are unemployed than by their actual privation. Work is needed even more than food and clothes.
The Prime Minister meets the executive of the Miners' Federation on March 5 to discuss the position of the coalfields.
