ACROSS THE STRAIT IN CANVAS CANOE
BARWELL GOT HALF WAT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Charles Barwell, who left at 7 o’clock last night in a canvas canoe to cross Cook Strait failed in his attempt. A telegram received from Porirua states that ho “got half way at 12.30. A fresh south breeze then blew up with the flood tide and ho returned, landing inside Mana Island.”
He is thought to be camping near PEmmortor
