DISABLED SOLDIERS AS CROSSING KEEPERS
OAMARU PROPOSAL. Per Press Association. OAMARU, Last Night. A deputation representing the Oamaru R.S.A. and Soldiers’ Aid Association, introduced by Mr. MaePheraon M.P., was received, by the Hon. W. B. Taverner (Minister of Railways) this afternoon, requesting, the Minister’s consideration of the employment of unemployed returned men in receipt ot pensions and economic pensions, as keepers of level crossings. The Minister, in reply stated that the quostion of level crossings of which there were 3000 in the Dominion was exercising tho minds of departmental officers.
At present, the department was working on a definite programme for eliminating dangerous crossings and if anything could be done to employ tho class of men referred to, it would have his hearty support. When the general question of level crossings received consideration, the representations of the deputation would not be overlookeo.
