PIGS FOR CROSS-BREEDING PURPOSES
CHARGED AS STUD STOCK FREIGHT.
A complaint that the Railway „ partmont was penalising pig fans by charging stud stock freight rats# on animals intended for cross-breeding purposes, was voiced by Mr. J. MacFarlane at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua branch of tho New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association.
Mr. MacFarlano advanced’ an instance of this over-charging, stating that he knew of pedigree pigs which were intended- to be used for crossbreeding purposes but which had been charged at stud stock rates when being taken over tho railway. Theso rates were fully 30 per cent, higher than ordinary Tates and he considered it a hardship that they should be charged for the transport of pigs which were intended for cross-breeding and the improvement of the breed. Mr. W. P. Bickers stated that the charge made largely dependod on the valuation of the pigs and the compensation that would be required should they be destroyed. The secretary, Mr. E. P. Nielsen, stated that he knew that stud stock freight charges could bo avoided by writ-ng the words “for cross-breeding purposes’’ across the consignment note. He suggested that Mr. MacFarlano adopt this course when trucking such animals.
Mr. MacFarlano said he would adopt this suggestion, but if it was not effective, tho matter required looking into.
