RAILWAY DEPARTMENT WILL NOT TAKE OVER WEIGHING SCALES
INSPECTOR WILL TEST. Some time ago the ManawatuOroua branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders' Association made representations to the Minister of Agriculture advocating that the Government should take over the control of pig-weighing scales at railway stations, as it was felt that these machines were not always reliable.
At its meeting yesterday the branch received a letter from the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, stating that the matter had been referred to him but that he regretted that his department could take no action in the direction indicated, as the expenso wbieh wonld be entailed -would not bo justified. The present scales were under the control of the Inspector of Weights and Measures, w r ho would ensure that they were correct.
