FLAMES ENCLOSE TOWN OF BOMBALA
EVERY CITIZEN A FIRE-FIGHTER. United Press Association —By Electri* Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, Jan. 18. A. message from Bombala reports that bush fires enclosed the town yesterday. The whole of the residents are-fighting the flames, which are rag-ing-An all directions. A well-known grazier ha,d 500 sheep burned. A flro also- raged all day at Buckley Springs. Blazing Inferno 'k- YALLOURN COAL MINE V DESTROYED. MELB6URNE, Jan. 18. With-the old open cut of the Yallourn coal-mine a blazing inferno, and bush fires advancing behind a fortyniile/ivind, the township of Yallourn is in grave peril. Men, women, and children are desperately fighting the flames. The-homes of over a thousand people are menaced. The settlement rests on the. top cut of the mine, which is now a. blazing crater, the flames shooting 150 feet into the air. Four homes have been destroyed. The powder magazine blew up, and since then trucks, winches, electrical equipment, and coalwinding gear have been crashing into a cauldron of flame.
Extensive fires have also, occurred at StrWdb'roke. 1 Eleven hundred acres of grassland have been burnt out and 300 •sheep have perished.
