BRIGHT DISPLAY BY WELLINGTON BATSMEN
Nine far 368 Runs PLUNKET SHIELD DECIDING MATCH WORKER’S BRILLIANT 151. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night The Plunlcet Shield match between Auckland and Wellington, which is virtually the deciding game in this season’s series, opened at Eden Park today under ideal conditions.
Lowry gained a great advantage for Wellington when he won the toss and the visitors occupied the wicket for the whole day, scoring 308 for the loss of nine wickets. •' - v
A feature of the batting was the fine innings by Worker for 151. Making his first appearance in Shield cricket this season, the ex-Auckland player, who now resides in Napier, gave a stilish display with only one difficult chanco in tho slips after he had passed the half-century. Dempster also batted well for 77, but survived a confident appeal for a catch behind tho wickets early in his innings. Lowry was aggressive and Lamason showed very sound form. James was shaping well when he was foolishly run out by Hiddleston. The Wellington tail failed badly after the tea adjournment, four wickets falling for 39 runs. The Auckland bowlers had an unenviable task, but Allcott, in addition to directing the attack most ably, proved that he is still the most reliable bowler in New Zealand by sending down 46 overs, 12 of -which were maidens and taking four wickets for 83 runs. Bowley was also accurate and required oaroful watching. Rowntreo was in good form and was responsible two wickets, his stumping of Worker being exceptionally brilliant.
