TENNIS PLAYERS SEVERELY ASSAULTED
HOODLUMS BEFORE THE COURT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 15. Alfred Henry Driscoll, aged 21, a jockey, and Edward Leydon, aged 22, wore charged to-day with being implicated in a midnight assault at Greenlane on December 26. Tho complainants were Kenneth Rowland Welch and Alan William Smithson. Both received a severe handling and Smithson, who came from Christchurch to play in tho Dominion tennis championships, could not compete. Welch was left by his assailants bleeding profusely from a wounded head and was rescued by Smithson, whose own injuries were not so serious. Counsel entered a plea for leniency, but tho magistrate, Mr McKean, said that accused deserved to be convicted and heavily fined. The case was adjourned till Friday.
The chief detective referred to Driscoll and Leydon as “hoodlums in a car at midnight.” The complainants denied refusing to assist them to repair a fault in the car or using bad language.
