NEXT GENERAL TO HAVE SALARY Received Tuesday 9.50 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 15. It is, disclosed that a London Salvation Army officer circulated 1500 field officers suggesting that they send a message of encouragement and affection to General Bramwell Booth during his trouble. The High Council discovering this, sent 1500 telegrams ordering field officers to ignore the appeal. It is understood that the High Coun cil intends to place the next General on a salary basis. CAN THE GENERAL RETIRE? INTERESTING legal point. LONDON, Jan. 14.

A question is being raised as to the legality of. General Booth’s reply to the High Council’s request that he should retire. It was completed last night. “It is not a refusal to retire,’’ says the Daily Mail, “but a declaration that he has no power to do so.’’ The Daily Mail says that it is a flaT refusal to retire in the meanwhile. Dramatic’ developments are promised when £he High Council resumes tomorrow as a result of doubts regarding the legality of the Council’s decision to ask the General to retire.

“According to the Army’s deed poll the Council only possesses power to depose the General on the ground of unfitness to continue leadership,” a Salvationist official told the Daily Mail. “The General has not the power to retire. If he does, it is highly probable that he wall be acting illegally. This fact will be brought to the Council’s notice, probably forcing reconsideration of the position afresh. The Council may refuse to do so, whereupon the matter may be decided in the Courts.”

THE HIGH COUNCIL. ACTING CONSTITUTIONALLY LONDON, Jan. ». It is .learned that General Boil’s reply will be taken to Sunbury by Commissioner Hay and two King’s Counsellors, whose opinion was taken before the summoning of tho Council. Yhcy reaffirmed their opinion that the Council is acting entirely constitutionally. It is expected that the resumed debate to-morrow will extend over tv?o or three days. It is stated that the Council has thus far excluded General Booth’s legal adviser and has also refused a request for a shorthand report of the proceedings. Commissioner Hay issued an official statement which said: “The Council has • not debated the question whether the General should be legally represented. In regard to a shorthand report the president has no comment to mhke.” The Daily Mail understands that despite General Booth’s refusal to resign) which will be accompanied fey an impassioned appeal for reconciliation, the High Council will proceod to depose him and appoint a successor. The most favoured candidates are Commander Eva Booth and Commissioner Hurren, who is an ardent Reformist.
