A veteran of the Crimean war, Mr. Cornelius Deverall, died at Aucldand yesterday, aged 95 years, states a Press wire. Councillors R. S. Black and C. H. Hayward will be candidates for the Mayoralty of Dunedin city at tfho Municipal elections in April. Mr. Henry Westcott Climic, C.E., well-known in the North Island as engineer connected with several municipal works, died at Hastings yesterday afternoon, aged 71. —P.A. From a Dannevirke correspondent we learn that Mr. Robert Stevens passed through a critical operation at a private hospital on Sunday. His condition is thought to be most satisfactory considering that he is 79 years of age.

Trustees P. J. Small and E. Wood will represent the Manawatu Drainage Board at the conference of local bodies to consider the modified scheme of the Mannwatu-Oroua River Board to relieve floods in the lower reaches of the Manawatu river.

At the conclusion of the meeting of the Executive Council, held yesterday, his Excellency the Governor-General presented Mr. R. N. Jones, Chief Judge of tlxe Native Land Court, and Undersecretary of Native Affairs, with the insigna of a Commander of tho Order of the British Empire. Rear-Admiral Edward Evans, better known as “Evans of the Broke,” has been appointed Rear-Admiral commanding the Royal Australian Squadron in succession to Rear-Admiral Hyde, of the Royal Australian Navy. Tho appointment is to date from March 18, and the command will be assumed about May 16. Rear-Admiral Evans will bo lent to the Royal Austral!// Navy from the date of disembarkation at Sydney. He commanded tho Antarctic Expedition after Captain Scott’s death, and in 1917 was in command of the warship Broke when that ship, aided by the Swift, destroyed six German destroyers.
