MINISTER’S INTEREST IN MATERNITY HOSPITALS
“LONG WAY TO GO YET.” That he was intensely interested in hospital work and intended : to make a careful sctudy of the Palmerston North institution, was mentioned by the Minister of Health (Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) when in Palmerston North yesterday. In some parts of New Zealand mothers were not gottfng the same consideration from hospital boards as in other parts ,and that state of things should bo remedied. It was an extremely important matter and ho would be privileged to observe what Palmerston North was doing. Tto mortality rate in Npw Zealand was not correctly appreciated and it was said that the poscition was grossly exaggerated. He hoped that was so, but in any case, a comparison of figures from other countries was not worth much. However, New Zealand had a long way to go before it could be complacent about its maternal death rate and he ■wanted to see the position better than it was.
