Welcome relief to-day from the great teat was brought about by a cool breeze from the sea. The highest reading to-day was 81 degrees. SYDNEY, Jan. 10. Serious fires are reported from all parts of the State. ’ Tho city itself is encircled by a complete ring of fires, and the damage will amount to many thousands of pounds. Eight homes have been destroyed in the Leumeah and Minto districts. The fire is sweeping towards Ingleburn. *The flames crept to within yards of the childrens'* ward at the Coast hospital, and Lane Cove hospital is a>!so in danger. The vehicle bridge over George’s river has been destroyed. Three houses were burned at Milperra, the occupants escaping only with the clothes they were wearing. Fifteen squares miles of country in the Bankstown district have been completely burnt out, A fireman collapsed in flames, but was dragged to safety. Two women and four children had a remarkable eseape from being burned to death or suffocated by the fire which Taged around the military area at Holdsworthy. Finding themselves encircled by flames they locked themselves in the old gaol and were almost suffocated when released. The fire has swept over thousands of acres. Adelong. is sending frantic appeals for men to help subdue the fire, which is sweeping towards the town. Graziers are frantically mustering stock. Two stations have been destroyed.
