ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF N.Z. NURSERYMEN

FORWARDING CITRUS CULTURE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Fifty nurserymen from all parts of New Zealand gathered at the annual conference of the New Zealand Horticultural Trades Association, tho president (Mr T. Waugh, of Wellington), presided. Tho visitors were welcomed to the city by the deputy-Mayor (Mr D. G. Suliivan), after which tho conference was opened for business by the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. G. W. Forbes). The following were elected to the landscape gardens committco: Messrs C. D. Taylor, J. W. McLeod, A. W. Buxton and C. Taylor. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £l3l. Outstanding subscriptions, which amounted to £274 G/10, were estimated to produce £l5O.

Officers for the coming year were elected as follow: President, Mr V. C. Davies (New Plymouth); vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. Edgington (Christchurch), and W. V. Kingsbeer (Palmerston North.) A remit from Christchurch, urging that a protest be entered to the Government against the duty on standard and novelty roses, and asking for its speedy removal, was lost. It was decided to urge tho Government to develop the botanic gardens scheme, as outlined by tho Department of Horticulture.

The following remits from Auckland were passed: "That a committee be set up to deal, in co-operation with the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, with all matters relative to the nomenclature of nursery stock and that to assist this committee, committees be set up wherever practicable by district council.” "That the conference heartily approves of tho work of the Institute of Horticulture’s citrus committee in its efforts to improve types of oranges and lemons by tho introduction of the best selected types of pedigree trees available.’’ The next meeting will be held in Wellington.
