SUMMER CARE OF THE EYES

AVOID SUN HEADACHES. A summer headache can spoil tho most perfect day for any woman. Even the pleasurable feelings created by a pretty frock, • gorgeous weather and good company are effectually dampod by a dull, heavy pain just behind the brows. Summer headaches are often caused by an overdose of light. Eyes require : only a certain amount of light for v*s--1 ion. Elash a bright light on to the eyes of a friend and watch her pupils contract. The iris or coloured curtain of tho eye is meant to prevent gfare from reaching the eye’s interior. When it does penetrate to the back of the eye, glare sets up discomfort. If tho light is exceptionally strong, as it is when sunshine is reflected from (snowfields, the back of the eye may be bleached, and serious damage done to the sight. The woman who is subject to summer headaches can save hcreself from much discomfort by wearing protective glasses when the sun is bright. Have a pair_of comfortable tortoiseshell frames fitted with lenses not too deeply tinted, but sufficiently coloured to soften tho light. These lenses arc preferable to dark glasses as the latter tend to make the world look dull, and have a depressing eiftect. It is well worth while paying a little more to have optically-worlced lenses, jas cheap glasses often have wavy sur--1 faces, which tend to interfere with sight. The following eyesight "dont’s” will prove useful to girls on holiday:— Don’t read with your book held in the sunlight. Don’t go on a sea trip in the sunshine without your eye protectors unless you have satisfied yourself that they arc unnecessary. Don't wait until the sun gives you a headache before putting on your glasses. A hat that shades the eyes is essential if one intends to be out in i the sun for a long time. After motoring or any excursion ■where one has been in contact with dust, bathing the eyes with a weak solution of boracic and water is advisable. Eye-shades made of green talc-like substance, such as tennis players wear, give good protection.
