A. L. France Wins Singles Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. Results of the finals of the Neiv Plymouth lawn tennis championships are: — Men’s singles: A. L. France (Wellington) beat T. Rhodes-Williams (Wellington), G —4, 6 —2, 6 —2. Ladies’ singles: Mrs. W. J. Melody (Wellington) beat Miss M. Andrew (Christchurch), G —2, G —s. Men’s doubles: A. G. Wallace (Wavcrly) and G. Wills (Hawera) beat C. Webster and C. G. Ellis (New Plymouthh), 2—6, S —G, G—-1, G—l. Ladies’ doubles: Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Melody (Wellington) beat Mrs. Arneill (Whangarei) and Miss Stevens, 6—2, 6—2. Mixed doubles: Rhodes-Williams (Wellington) and Miss Gibson (Timaru) beat A. C. Stedman (Auckland) and Miss Andrew (Christchurch), 6—S, G—4, 6—4. Boys’ singles: A. J. Dickie (Waverley) beat V. Drew (Christchhurch), 6—4, 6—5. Girls’ singles: Joan Ward (Stratford) beat Jean Ward (Stratford), 6—2, 6—4. Pahiatua’s Club Tourney SWAINSON’S GREAT RECORD WITH CLUB. PAHIATUA, Jan. 5. Rain delayed the conclusion of tho Pahiatua lawn tennis tournament which ended after fopr days’ play. J. G. Swainson won the men’s singles from Frank Mackie (Woodville). Swainson, who has been top of the Pahiatua Club ladder continuously for 27 years, first won the championship 21 years ago, and has won it many times since. The ladies’ doubles was won by Mrs J. Coombo and Miss N. Irving, and tho mixed doubles by E. E. Scott (Wellington) and Miss G. Armistead (Woodville). Ladies' Championship Singles: Miss N. Astle (Palmerston North) beat Miss A. Armistead (Kumeroa) 9—l. Men’s Championship Doubles: J. G. Swainson and F. Mackie beat K. W. Dyer and D C. Coombo (Mastertoa) 6—5, 5 —6„ G—4. Men's Handicap Doubles: H. D. MeConachic and J. M. Mason (Fcilding) beat G. Tolliurst and W. V. Fisher (Wellington) 60 —48. In the semi-finals of the men’s singles championship J. G. Swainson boat W. V. Hobin (Waipawa) 6—3. 5 G. 6—4. Swainson will play, off with the winner of the F, Mackio-R. W Dyer match. Australia Beats Britain at Tennis JOUR RUBBERfs TO TWO. Australian Press Association. Received Sunday, 7.0 p.m. SYDNEY, Jau. 6. Australia won the tennis teat match against Great Britain by four rubbers to two. A feature of yesterday’s play was Willard’s great form against Collins (England). Results are:— Singles: Willard beat Collins 6—2, 6 —l, 7—5. Doubles: Crawford and Hopman beat Gregory and Austin 6 —4, 6 —3, 79, 6—2. Total: Australia, four rubbers, 14 sets, 127 games; British Isles, two rubbers, 10 sets, 117 games. Canada Challenges for Davis Cup Australian Press Association. Received Sunday 7.0 p.m. OTTAWA, Jan. 5. The Canadian Lawn Tennis Association decided on Friday to issue a challenge for the Davis Cup.
