RHODES SCHOLARS
CHOICE OF STUDIES, It has been said that Rhodes scholarships tend to produce, not empire-build-ers and statesmen, but lawyers, teachers and scientists. The annual statement of the Rhodes Trust for tho academic year 1027-28 certainly bcar3 out this generalisation. Of lSi scholars (94 from the British Empire and 93 American) in residence at Oxford, no fewer than 55 were studying law, 43 natural science or medicine, 22 philosopy, polities or economics, 21 English literature and 17 modern history, leaving 29 divided among other studies. The report refers to the deaths c/ four ex-scholars and one scholar during the year, including that of Dr. J. Allan Thomson, director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, who was at Oxford from 1904 to 3908. The degree list includes R. S. Aitkcn, New Zealand, 1924 (Balliol), doctor of philosophy in medicine. C. E. Low, 192(5 (Magdalen), obtained a second-class ia French in tho final honour schools, and •T. A. Dunning, 1925 (New College), a third-class in mathematics. C. E. Low was awarded a Heath Harrison travelling scholarship in German. W. G. Kalaugher, 1927, represented Oxford against Cambridge in athletics, including re-lay races, and was a member of the New Zealand Olympic team.
