FOR A HEALTHY LIFE
MODERATE USE OF'ALCOHOL. (‘The Scientific- Press” of London (Faber and Gwyer, Ltd.) have published in their series of ‘ ‘ Modern Health Books,” one by Dr. E. T. Burke, who is a recognised authdrity on alcoholism. Dr. Burke says: “The vast majority of people who take alcohol are hy no means ‘alcoholics.’ A glass of beer with lunch is no more alcoholism than a weekly visit to church is religious mania. .The taking of a moderate amount of alcohol is a powerful factor in creating sociability, in saving sanity, and in protecting civilisation from boredom. It increases both the health and happiness of many people. There is not, and never has been, the slightest evidence to support the oft-made assertion that the moderate use of alcohol is evil, that it causes illhealth and moral deterioration. On the contrary, it has been productive of much mental rest, enjoyment, happiness, and good fellowship, and is conducive to a healthy life and bright mental outlook. There can bo no doubt that much harm has boon done to the cause of real temperance by the prohibition fanatic, who possesses exactly the same nervous instability that produces the inebriate.” '
