BEEF CATTLE SCARCE
POSITION IN WAIRARAPA, ' HIGH PRICES AT SALES. The Wairarapa district is at present suffering from a shortage of beef cattic. The retail price has been raised locally by a penny a pound and the outlook .for consumers is not favourable. There is sufficient beef in the district to supply the local demand, but Taranaki buyers have been operating, largely at the sales. Beef at present is bringing 50s a hundred pounds, or £2O a bullock, which price has not been equalled for some time. Mastorton butchers hold the opinion that the days of cheap beef have ended for two or three years. Farmers are concentrating on export rather than on the local market.
