AMERICAN TIMBER
■ ■ To the /Editor. ' • Sir,—Many thanks for your excellent report of my talk on VTimber'' appearing in .this morning Times. There are one or two statements as printed which 'contain a meaning, and I would be pleased 1 if Jou would correct them: I “Kauri now very scarce and procurable j only -in the north of- Auckland - district; | and. maire was very useful for furniture"; and “In v these shingle mills 1 Japanese operated” the machinery while ] Chinese and Hindoos were employed in the sorting and packing, yards.” I I-would like to make it plain'that this as above applies to. British bia mills and not to. Californian mills, which employ no Hindoos or Asiatics., In - the British Columbia mills these races are employed in largo numbers but the leading men are all Europeans. Thanking you in anticipation, I ain, etc., : G_ BARTHOLOMEW. ! ,
