FISHING INDUSTRY IS DISCUSSED AT MEETING
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. Important matters affecting the fishing industry were discussed by a meeting of the Otago Fishmongers’ Association, Mr A. E. Hefford, Chief Inspector of Fisheries being present. A resolution was passed that the Government be requested to consider the advisability of setting up a council comprising representatives of the Fisheries Department, fishermen* trawl owners, fishmongers and wholesale merchants to act in advisory capacity in developing the industry from the local and export aspects ( It was suggested that in order to make salmon a marketable proposition for three months every year a license be granted for the lease or one mile stretches in the principal rivers in the Dominion for netting. ./ Revision of transport rates was-aK urged, it being stated as an example that case of fruit railed from Balclutha to Dunedin cost 1/5 a case, fish of the same weight cost 2/10. Mr Hefford stated the Fisheries Department had already approached the railways in this matter.
